A recent event at a hospital in Brampton, as reported by Global News, has sparked important conversations about the role of cultural and religious sensitivity within healthcare. Joginder Singh Kaler, a practising Sikh from the Greater Toronto Area, had his beard shaved without consent while he was unconscious, despite his family’s request to preserve it. As uncut hair is a key article of faith in Sikhism, this incident has understandably caused distress for both the family and the wider Sikh community.

The hospital has launched an internal investigation, with a commitment to partnering with the family to review the situation thoroughly. While this process is ongoing, it has raised vital questions about how healthcare institutions can better respect and understand the diverse cultural practices of the patients they serve.

As the Anti-Black Racism and Systemic Discrimination Collective of Peel, we recognize that incidents like these, highlight the importance of continuous learning and awareness. We are partners with many community agencies, and our shared goal is to ensure that all individuals receive care that honours their identity and respects their faith.

We understand the complexities healthcare professionals face when providing urgent care, but it’s equally important to acknowledge the need for comprehensive cultural competency training and clear communication with families about their loved one’s care. This is especially crucial in a region as diverse as Peel, where cultural and religious practices are an integral part of many patients’ lives.

We invite the community to share their thoughts on how we can collectively foster greater understanding and respect for cultural and religious practices across all sectors, including healthcare.
